If you’re site or blog contains these words, perhaps as current events, Google will rank your site higher for having updated content and current event keywords.  Although your site may be real estate related or a classified ad site, like www.Blithernet.com, you can see how search engines will see this content and send people to you.

“Keywords” is a deceptive term because it typically is more than one word.  The term should be Key Phrases, instead and choosing the right ones for your website can be tough.

An easy way to start the search is to check what the competition is using and there are two quick ways to find this information (www.Spyfu.com & www.adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal).  Each site will give you a quick list of keywords associated with whatever domain you enter.  This provides a great starting point and you can always make changes.

When you have selected keywords that speak to you, your website, and your business, you’re ready to start your SEO.

This doesn’t mean spending a lot of money.  In fact, most SEO is free, if you’re willing to spend a little time marketing, each day.

Blogging is important and I’ll touch more on this in upcoming posts, but you need to make sure you take the most relevant words and place them in your site.

There’s a great deal of discrepancy on the “best” practice for placing the keywords and it’s more than just creating text on your page.  You should consult with your webmaster for suggestions on placing keywords in your site code.

For those of us designing and creating our own sites, here are some hints:

1. Always use a page title
2. Always use H1 and H2 headers
3. Use the keywords in the page-text, also

This will help your site be ranked better by Google and other search engines.

   3. www.Webmaster.live.com
   4. Choose keywords that make since to your visitors
      1. Realtor may seem right but “real estate agent” works also
      2. Use www.Spyfu.com to see the words your competition uses
      3. Pick words and stick to them
   5. Be consistent and give it time
      1. Seeing a return from SEO marketing may take 6 months or longer
      2. Don’t give up if you it takes time
      3. Don’t cheat and take shortcuts
   6. Don’t rely on companies that promise Page #1 ranking
      1. They can do it but you will be punished for cheating
      2. When the search engines discover the cheat, they delete your site
      3. It take 6-12 months just to get relisted after being deleted
